Diabetes is believed to be a leading cause of blindness in the industrialized world in people between the ages of 25 and 74. Diabetic retinopathy affects more than 5.3 million Americans age 18 and older.

Prior to age 40, diabetic retinopathy affects whites more frequently than other races.  In later decades,

Caucasians sare the most commonly affected by the disease.

With diabetic retinopathy, there may be seemingly unnoticeable changes in the retina that could lead to serious problems. “Dilated eye exams are a must.”
